Agnes, Martyr at Rome

Agnes, Martyr at Rome

Almighty ever-living God, who choose what is weak in the world to confound the strong, mercifully grant, that we, who celebrate the heavenly birthday of your Martyr Saint Agnes, may follow her constancy in the faith. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

The late Anglican clergyman and spiritual writer, Kenneth Leech recounts an Easter Christian story of a person who came to a monk and asked, ‚Äú’Father, what is prayer?’ The monk held out his hands and flames shot up from his fingers. ‘That is prayer,’ he said. He was a soul on fire, and when necessary he could manifest the fact.‚Äù For most of us, we will never experience prayer of that sort, but that does not prevent us from desiring to pray better and to pray deeper.

Beginning tonight, Thursday January 21, at 6:30pm, and continuing for the next three consecutive Thursdays, please plan on attending a four-session course on prayer. Fathers Turner and Spurlock are pleased to join Saint Thomas parishioner Brett Moore, and spiritual director Kari Kristina Reeves in teaching this course.

Tonight is our first session and will be led by Brett Moore, who will provide an overview of what prayer is.

Subsequent Classes

  • February 4: Father Turner will lead our third session, taking us further into the experience of prayer through a sensory experience of prayer.
  • February 11: Kari Kristina Reeves will lead our final session, exploring and helping us experience the different kinds of prayer.

The classes are free and open to the public.

While not required, we are pleased to recommend a text for the course, Canyon Road: A Book of Prayer written by Kari Reeves. Hardback copies of Kari’s book will be available for sale at each session of the class for a cost of $40, and will also be made available for sale in our bookstore.
