The First Sunday Of Advent

The First Sunday Of Advent

Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Picturing the Annunciation

This class, taught by The Rev. Meredith Ward, explored the story of the Annunciation through art and Scripture (Luke 1:26-38), and offered an opportunity to deepen our understanding of this central event of our faith as we enter the season of Advent. A video recording of the class is available above.

The session began with a brief overview of how the imagery and iconography of the Annunciation developed and was used in popular worship. We then explored the practice of looking closely at images, and hearing Luke’s text read aloud, to engage more deeply with the message of this miraculous story, and what it means for us today.
