The Third Sunday Of Easter

The Third Sunday Of Easter

O God, whose blessed Son did manifest himself to his disciples in the breaking of bread: Open, we pray thee, the eyes of our faith, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Today’s Theology Talk is led by Dr. Travis LaCouter Katholieke, Universiteit Leuven (Belgium).

Dorothy Day (1897-1980) is remembered today as a founder of the Catholic Worker movement, a prolific writer and tireless activist whose understanding of the demands of Christian charity shaped her radical vision of social and political reform. She lived during the most turbulent years of the 20th century, and was witness to both the highs and lows of American society as a lifelong resident of New York City. This talk will introduce Day’s vision of Christian mercy and radical hospitality as an alternative to a politics based on violence, exclusion, and fear. Day’s pacifism, anarchism, localism, and spirituality will also be addressed. What can this remarkable figure still teach us, more than 40 years after her death? What model of Christian social engagement did she exemplify? And what possible futures can she help us imagine from amidst our own dramatic social upheavals?

The Adult Education program at Saint Thomas Church offers sound Christian teaching presented with intellectual vigor, teaching that is grounded in Holy Scripture, mediated by the catholic tradition that is the inheritance of Anglicanism and set forth in the Book of Common Prayer.
