John Mason Neale (1818-1866) is one of the most versatile and impressive figures of the Oxford movement, a liturgist, hymn writer, ecumenical pioneer, novelist, and founder of religious communities. One of the first ritualists, he was fundamental in reconnecting the worship of the Church of England with the liturgical practice of the Western Church, both as a scholar and in practice among the religious communities for which he was responsible. Ignored and distrusted by the hierarchy of the Church of England during his relatively short life, he was instrumental in changing the face of Anglicanism to what we now see and expect today.

Canon Robin Ward has been the Principal of St Stephen’s House since 2006. St Stephen’s House is an Anglican Theological foundation with an affiliation to Oxford University. His initial theological studies were in patristics, the study of early Church history and theology. Since then he has taught moral theology (Christian ethics), ecclesiology (the doctrine of the Church), and sacramental theology. He is a member of the Faculty of Theology and Religion at the University of Oxford.
