In 2019, John Henry Newman (1801-1890) was canonised by Pope Francis in a ceremony in Rome. Newman had been the Vicar of the University Church in Oxford (1828-1843), and became one of the great leaders of the Oxford Movement, which animated the Catholic Revival of the Church of England. In 1845, he became a Roman Catholic. He was ordained and eventually became a Cardinal. His theological writings were significant and have exercised considerable influence in the Roman Catholic Church. Currently, there are conversations in the Vatican about Newman becoming a Doctor of the Church. Is this development a cause of celebration for the Anglican Communion or a challenge? How might this effect ecumenical relations between the Anglican Communion and the Roman Catholic Church? How might his insights about conscience, the role of the laity, the development of doctrine, and education help us to understand his distinctive contribution as both an Anglican and a Catholic?
Saint Thomas Theological Education Program is at the service of those who seek a deeper understanding of faith and want to nourish their worship and their prayer. The teaching is rooted in Scripture, Christian tradition and spirituality. The lecturers are The Rev. Dr. Luigi Gioia, Theologian in Residence, and internationally renowned guest speakers who are committed to making theology accessible to non-specialists. The classes are held on Sundays at 10 AM on the Fifth Floor of the Parish House and are streamed online. Additionally, recordings and handouts are made available for those who cannot attend the live sessions. For more information about our theology program and to receive links for weekly Sunday Theology Talks, please contact Fr. Gioia and register online.
