All Saints’ Sunday

All Saints’ Sunday

Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Above: representations of the saints fill the building of Saint Thomas, from the reredos, to the woodwork, to the exterior, to the windows. The window above, installed in 1927, is the “Saint Thomas window.” It is located on the south wall of the nave, the third window from the reredos. We hope you will join us on Sunday, so that the pews, in addition to the walls of our great church, will be full of saints.

Based on the services held daily in the medieval Church, Choral Evensong as arranged in the Book of Common Prayer of the Anglican Church has been sung regularly since the Sixteenth Century. Many people who are new to worship at Saint Thomas prefer to come to Choral Evensong because it is relatively passive. The service includes readings (just as would occur at Evening Prayer) and prayers led by a priest. An anthem as well as a setting of the Magnificat and the Nunc dimittis are sung by the choir. Today’s Choral Evensong is Solemn because of All Saints. Read more about Choral Evensong here, or view the Choral Evensong Service Card posted to the bottom of this page.

‚ñ∫There is no Mass following Choral Evensong on Sundays. If you would like to make your Holy Communion for the week, consider attending one of the morning Eucharists, or else at any of the other fourteen masses at Saint Thomas later this week.

‚ñ∫Last week, the Rector gave a sermon at Choral Evensong about Choral Evensong: what it is and why we do it. You may read or listen to that sermon here.

‚ñ∫This is the sixth week of the 2012 Every Member Canvass, through which we raise the money to pay for the annual operating expenses of the Church and Choir School. Read more here and consider making a pledge online. We need everyone who worships with us, including the many thousands from around the globe who have listened to at least one webcast, to consider making a pledge in support of our mission.
