Our Theologian in Residence, the Rev. Dr. Luigi Gioia, continues a year-long course to dive into all the main areas of theology: Faith, Scripture, Tradition, God, Christ, Salvation, the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, and the Church – always with an eye to their relevance for spirituality and for everyday life.
Jesus understood his mission as the establishment of the ‘Kingdom of God’, that is the decisive intervention of God to change history. He also called the twelve Apostles to be the ‘foundations’ of his church and sent them to preach the coming of the Kingdom of God to the whole world. Does this mean that the ‘church’ and the ‘kingdom of God’ are the same thing? We shall see that while the Church is at the service of the Kingdom of God, it is not the only way nor the only ‘place’ where God ‘reigns’, that is ‘acts decisively’. This means that no human institutions, not even the Church, can ever claim the monopoly on God’s action in the world and in history.
The Adult Education program at Saint Thomas Church offers sound Christian teaching presented with intellectual vigor, teaching that is grounded in Holy Scripture, mediated by the catholic tradition that is the inheritance of Anglicanism and set forth in the Book of Common Prayer.
