Our Theologian in Residence, the Rev. Dr. Luigi Gioia, continues a year-long course to dive into all the main areas of theology: Faith, Scripture, Tradition, God, Christ, Salvation, the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, and the Church – always with an eye to their relevance for spirituality and for everyday life.

Jesus’ death was a judicial execution perpetrated by Roman soldiers on the basis of false accusations. Nothing in the modality of his death is comparable with the sacrifices of the Old Testament – and in any case human sacrifices are an abomination for the biblical religiosity. And yet, during the last supper Jesus himself talks about his imminent death by referring to the sacrifice of the covenant when he says about the coup of wine: “this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” (Mt 26:28). Fascinatingly, it is possible to establish a connection between Jesus’ death and the so called Aqedah, that is the ‘’binding’ of Isaac, and then with the Pascal Lamb. Teasing out these connections correctly is essential to understand the way in which Jesus saved us.

The Adult Education program at Saint Thomas Church offers sound Christian teaching presented with intellectual vigor, teaching that is grounded in Holy Scripture, mediated by the catholic tradition that is the inheritance of Anglicanism and set forth in the Book of Common Prayer.
