Our Theologian in Residence, the Rev. Dr. Luigi Gioia, continues a year-long course to dive into all the main areas of theology: Faith, Scripture, Tradition, God, Christ, Salvation, the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, and the Church – always with an eye to their relevance for spirituality and for everyday life.
Broadly speaking, Protestants see grace as a ‘favor’: God gives us the grace of forgiveness in the same way as a judge grants a pardon to someone who has been accused of a crime. From the Catholic viewpoint grace often is seen as a sort of ‘boost’ or a special God-given power to overcome our human limitations so that we can do good and act virtuously. Both views are too narrow. A more fruitful way to approach grace is paying attention the changes faith produces in us: God becomes real for us, we see others differently, find joy in new things, have a new understanding of who we are, behave in ways that non-believers cannot make sense of, gather in communities where mutual care overcomes the individual drive for greed. In the end grace is not just something in which we believe but also a reality that has a tangible impact on our lives.
