The Fourth Sunday Of Advent
O Rex gentium — “O King of the Nations”

The Fourth Sunday Of Advent

We beseech thee, Almighty God, to purify our consciences by thy daily visitation, that when thy Son Jesus Christ cometh he may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Today we conclude a five-part series on Richard Hooker’s theological masterpiece, The Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity.  The course was taught by Fr. Patrick Cheng, our Theologian in Residence.

Richard Hooker, a sixteenth century priest in the Church of England, is widely acknowledged as the founder of the Anglican theological tradition and one of the great Anglican theologians.  In this series, we have explored Hooker’s life as well as the preface and eight books of The Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity.

Today Fr. Cheng will conclude this series with a discussion of the final three books of The Laws and some reflections on the legacy of Richard Hooker.A modern English translation of the preface and first four books of The Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity will be available for purchase in the parish bookstore.  The bookstore will also carry an introduction to the life and thought of Richard Hooker.
