The Second Sunday Of Advent

The Second Sunday Of Advent

Merciful God, who sent thy messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the HolySpirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The service begins with the clergy and choir entering in silence, going to their respective places in the chancel. The Litany then begins with the words “O God the Father, Creator of heaven and earth” and the clergy and choir walk a long Procession through the nave, moving down the center aisle and through the side aisles among the congregation. By the time the Rector chants “Son of God: we beseech thee to hear us,” the choir and clergy have returned to their places in the chancel.

If you listen to this service via the webcast, you will notice the movements of clergy and choir throughout the Litany Procession as they as they go farther and come nearer.

After the Litany Procession, the Rector chants the Collect of the Day, and the lessons and psalm proceed as usual, leading up to a sermon by the Rector.

The Holy Eucharist is given at the High Altar and, for convenience, at the Chantry rail as well.

If you intend to join us for this service in person, we will be most happy to welcome you. For this service especially, please arrive on time as the Litany Procession itself will make it difficult for you to make your way discreetly to a seat once the Procession has started. ‚ñ∫The Rector speaks about our tradition of December Messiah concerts in his weekly audio message. If you haven’t yet purchased tickets, consider doing so right now online. You may attempt to purchase tickets at the door on either concert night; however, these concerts often sell out.

‚ñ∫ Next Sunday, December 11, please attend our annual youth Christmas Pageant at 1pm in the church. Our youngest parishioners perform A New York Carol by Lucky Gold.

‚ñ∫If you haven’t yet participated in the 2012 EMC, we encourage you to do so before the end of 2011. Also, there are two additional opportunities to give during this Advent season. The first is Christmas Flower Memorials, and the other is for gifts for needy children as part of the Angel Tree Project.
