The Third Sunday Of Advent (Gaudete)

Stir up thy power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let thy bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

Dear Friends in Christ,

Over the course of 12 classes, we will engage in a close reading of the Greek, Latin, and English texts of this important fourth century statement of the faith.  We will also explore what this creed means for us today.

If you are interested in taking this class, please RSVP. (You do not need to RSVP if you have already received the login information.)

If you would like more information about this class, please contact Fr. Patrick Cheng, Theologian in Residence.

Today’s topic will be ecclesiology, which is the doctrine of the church.  We will also discuss the sacrament of baptism.

Greek:

εἰς μίαν ἁγίαν καθολικὴν καὶ ἀποστολικὴν ἐκκλησίαν·
ὁμολογοῦμεν ἓν βάπτισμα εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν·

Latin:

in unam catholicam atque apostolicam Ecclesiam.
Confitemur unum baptismum in remissionem peccatorum;

Rite I:

And I believe one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church;
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins;

Rite II:

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

Preparation

There is no need to prepare anything in advance for the class.  Just come as you are!  However, if you would like to do some advance reading, you can read the Rite I and Rite II versions of the Nicene Creed from the Book of Common Prayer:

You can also check out the creed in Greek and Latin, although no knowledge of these languages is presupposed for class participants.

Recordings

We will be recording all of the classes and will link to these videos for on-demand viewing.  I will circulate the links to the class distribution list after they are available.  To make sure that you are on the distribution list, please sign up if you haven’t already done so.

Blessings,

Fr. Cheng

Theologian in Residence
