The Fifteenth Sunday After Pentecost
The Fifteenth Sunday After Pentecost
O God, who declarest thy almighty power chiefly in showing mercy and pity: Mercifully grant unto us such a measure of thy grace, that we, running to obtain thy promises, may be made partakers of thy heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Proper 21)

Saint Thomas is pleased, following upon the request of the Rt. Rev’d Mark S. Sisk, Bishop of New York, to host today’s special Choral Evensong to celebrate the ten years of ‚ÄúCalled to Common Mission,‚Äù the full communion agreement between the Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. Along with Bishop Sisk, we welcome as our preacher the Rev’d Dr. Robert Rimbo, bishop of the ELCA Metro New York synod. We also welcome as our lectors two noted ecumenists: our honorary assistant Father Wright, and the Rev’d Dr. William Rusch, both of whom were closely involved in the development of this ecumenical milestone.
Based on the services held daily in the medieval Church, Choral Evensong as arranged in the Book of Common Prayer of the Anglican Church has been sung regularly since the Sixteenth Century. Many people who are new to worship at Saint Thomas prefer to come to Choral Evensong because it is relatively passive. The service includes readings (just as would occur at Evening Prayer) and prayers led by a priest. An anthem as well as a setting of the Magnificat and the Nunc dimittis are sung by the choir. Read more about Choral Evensong here, or view the Choral Evensong Service Card posted to the bottom of this page.
There is no Mass following Choral Evensong on Sundays. If you would like to make your Holy Communion for the week, consider attending one of the morning Eucharists, or else at any of the other sixteen masses at Saint Thomas later this week.
