Daniel Hyde conducts The Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys, soloists Hyesang Park and John Brancy, and pianists Micha≈Ç Biel and Katelan Terrell in Brahms’s arrangement for two pianos of his German Requiem.
This two-piano version of Brahms’s ‘Requiem’ was put to the test in 1871 after the version for orchestra was subjected to a chaotic premiere. While piano transcriptions of his orchestral works were common for Brahms, the task at hand was more complex than usual: translating the highly independent and diverse instrumental parts to an effective accompaniment for the substantial choral writing. The result was an an up-close and intimate version of A German Requiem – an arrangement for two players which allows for a degree of precision and contrapuntal clarity that cannot be achieved in the orchestral version.
‚ÄúBrahms’s opening ‚ÄúSelig sind‚Äù (‚ÄúBlessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted‚Äù) is one of the most haunting passages in the choral repertory; it was beautifully rendered here by the excellent St. Thomas Choir‚Ķ‚Äù – The New York Times
